cast iron in the oil and gas industry

Cast iron is normally not permitted for pressure containment components in hydrocarbon processing streams because of its brittleness, especially in areas where it could be quenched during the course of fighting a fire. However, cast irons are routinely used in many services for internal components such as pump impellers.

Most cast irons cannot be repaired by welding. Thus, repairability sometimes precludes the selection of cast irons as materials of construction.
